GREEN DECKHAND

Paperwork due during the first 30-day hitch (all found in Job Training Workbook):

  • New Employee Vessel Orientation Checklist
  • Green Deckhand 30-day Program of Instruction Checklist
  • E-Learning Program
  • Green Deckhand Performance Evaluation Form

 

To advance to an EXPERIENCED DECKHAND, the following paperwork is required (all found in the Deckhand Job Training Workbook):

  • 60-Day Program of Instruction
  • Letter of Recommendation

TANKERMAN

To advance to TANKERMAN TRAINEE, the following paperwork is required (all found in Tankerman Trainee Job Training Workbook):

  • Required Reading Checklist
  • Tankerman Trainee Qualification Tasks Checklist
  • Cargo Transfer Logs (10 total)
  • Letter of Recommendation from Captain
  • Tankerman Training School
  • Merchant Mariner Credential (Tankerman license, obtained from USCG)

ENGINEER

To advance to an ENGINEER TRAINEE, the following paperwork is required (all found in ENGINEER TRAINEE I Job Training Workbook):

  • Required Reading Checklist
  • Engineer Trainee I Qualification Checklist
  • Chief/Relief Engineer Performance Evaluation Form
  • Shop Rotation Checklist
  • Engineer Trainee 2 Position Eligibility Statement
  • Letter of Recommendation

 

To advance to an ENGINEER TRAINEE 2, the following paperwork is required (all found in Job Training Workbook):

  • Required Reading Checklist
  • The Trainee 2 Qualification Checklist
  • Chief/Relief Chief Evaluation Form
  • Shop Rotation Checklist
  • Engineer Trainee 3 Position Eligibility Statement
  • Letter of Recommendation

 

To advance to an ENGINEER TRAINEE 3, the following paperwork is required (all found in Job Training Workbook):

  • Required Reading Checklist
  • The Trainee 2 Qualification Checklist
  • Chief/Relief Chief Evaluation Form
  • Shop Rotation Checklist
  • Relief Engineer Position Eligibility Statement
  • Letter of Recommendation

STEERSMAN

To advance to a STEERSMAN 1, the following paperwork is required (all found in STEERSMAN Job Training Workbook) along with additional licenses:

  • Qualification Process
  • License: Apprentice Mate (Pilot) of Towing Vessels Upon Great Lakes, Inland Water and Western Rivers
  • Towing Officer Assessment Record (TOAR) (Western Rivers)
  • TOAR (Great Lakes and Inland)
  • Critical Areas/Docking TOAR Log
  • Locks TOAR Log
  • Bridges TOAR Log
  • Mariner Towing Vessel Service Log
  • Letter of Recommendation from Captain and Port Captain

 

To advance to a STEERSMAN 2, the following paperwork is required (all found in STEERSMAN Job Training Workbook):

  • License: Mate (Pilot) of Towing Vessels Upon Great Lakes, Inland Water and Western Rivers
  • Continued Work in TOAR
  • Letter of Recommendation

RELIEF CAPTAIN / CAPTAIN

To advance to a RELIEF CAPTAIN or CAPTAIN, the following paperwork is required:

  • License: Master of Towing Vessels Upon Great Lakes, Inland Waters and Western Rivers
  • Letter of Recommendation from Captain (or Port Captain in case of promotion to Captain)

 

PILOT

To advance to PILOT, paperwork is required (all found in STEERSMAN Job Training Workbook):

  • License: Mate (Pilot) of Towing Vessels Upon Great Lakes, Inland Water, and Western Rivers
  • Completion of TOAR
  • Check Ride with Port Captain
  • Letter of Recommendation
